Why Your Favorite Fall Candle Might Be Hurting Your Indoor Air Quality

Fall is officially here, which means everyone’s burning pumpkin spice, apple cider, and cinnamon candles nonstop. I get it—I love a cozy vibe as much as the next person. But here’s the thing: most candles are silently polluting your indoor air with toxic chemicals you’d never knowingly bring into your home.

Even the ones labeled “natural.”

What’s Actually in Most Candles?

Most conventional candles are made from paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct. When you burn paraffin, it releases chemicals like toluene and benzene into the air—both of which are known carcinogens.

Then there’s the wick. Many wicks contain metal cores (often lead) to help them stay upright. When burned, these release heavy metals directly into your breathing space.

And don’t even get me started on synthetic fragrances. That “autumn harvest” scent? It’s a chemical cocktail of phthalates and other endocrine disruptors. Companies aren’t required to disclose what’s in “fragrance,” so you have no idea what you’re actually inhaling.

But Wait—What About “Natural” Candles?

Here’s where things get tricky. Just because a candle says “soy” or “natural” doesn’t mean it’s clean.

Many soy candles are blended with paraffin to lower costs. And even 100% soy candles can contain synthetic fragrances and chemical additives.

Beeswax and coconut wax are better options—but only if they’re truly unscented or scented with pure essential oils (not “fragrance oils,” which are synthetic).

What I Burn Instead

I’ve completely switched to essential oil diffusers for seasonal scents. Here are my go-to fall blends:

Cozy Autumn

  • 3 drops cinnamon bark
  • 2 drops clove
  • 2 drops sweet orange

Spiced Chai

  • 3 drops cardamom
  • 2 drops ginger
  • 1 drop vanilla (if you have it)

Forest Walk

  • 3 drops cedarwood
  • 2 drops pine
  • 1 drop eucalyptus

If you really love the ambiance of candlelight, I keep a few pure beeswax taper candles on hand. They’re unscented, burn clean, and actually purify the air by releasing negative ions.

The Bottom Line

You’re working hard to reduce toxins in your home—don’t let candles undo all that effort. Your lungs (and your hormones) will thank you.

Ready to make the swap? Your indoor air quality is worth it. 🕯️
